History AES activity in Kazakhsatn
The AES started its activity in Kazakhstan in 1996 with the acquisition of the Ekibastuz GRES, in1997 was signed the Altai contract for the purchase of 4 CHPs (Ust-Kamenogorsk, Sogrinsk, Leninogorsk, Semipalatinsk) and the provision of a 20-year concession of Ust-Kamenogorsk and Shulbinsk hydropower plants in East Kazakhstan region. In 1998, AES has signed a contract to manage the Ust-Kamenogorsk Heat Nets for 10 years. In June 1999, AES has managed Distribution Energy Company of the East Kazakhstan region (subsequently merged into EK REC JSC) for a period of 15 years. In 2001 was acquired Maikuben coal mine, Semipalatinsk CHP took under management the boilers of Semipalatinsk city. In autumn 2002, the company sold Semipalatinsk CHP and Leninogorsk CHP to private investors. In 2004, in accordance with the Law "On Electric Power Industry", EK REC JSC allocated in a separate structure and formed its subsidiary Shygysenergotrade LLP.
In 2008, Ekibastuz GRES-1 and Maikuben West were sold to Kazakhmys, and at the same time, an agreement was concluded between the AES and Kazakhmys enterprise for management. In the same year, the management contract was extended on Ust-Kamenogorsk Heat Nets for 5 years (until the end of May 2013). In March 2009, the management contract of the Ekibastuz GRES-1 and Maikuben West was completed by mutual agreement. In May 2012, EK REC JSC and the Energy Retail Company Shygysenergotrade LLC was terminated. In June 2013 ended the contract of trust management of shares of Ust-Kamenogorsk Heat Networks JSC and the company came under the control of akimat of Ust-Kamenogorsk city.
