A joint AES-GIZ project final event held in Ust-Kamenogorsk.

On September 6th 2017 a joint AES-GIZ event took place at the East Kazakhstan State Technical University (EKSTU) in Ust-Kamenogorsk. It was hosted by AES Kazakhstan and GIZ and brought together representatives fr om all project partners, including EKSTU, Polytechnical College, as well as external guests, fr om the National Chamber of Entrepreneurs, Ulba Metallurgical Plant and KEGOC (по возможности укажите полное название).

The main objective of the event was to showcase project results achieved since its launch in April 2015. The speakers highlighted the 2 handbooks on Workplace Safety and Energy Efficiency specifically developed for the project. A separate presentation was dedicated to the ‘Synergy’ interactive game, the first of its kind which is aimed at teaching and testing students the basics of Energy Efficiency.

Olessya Bogun, the project coordinator, said: “Looking back from wh ere we started, the East Kazakhstan Regional Sustainability Project for Training in Workplace Safety and Energy Efficiency turned out to be successful. The project clearly benefited AES staff, trainers, and contractors, including employees from local power, mining and metallurgical businesses as well as local authorities and municipalities, academic staff and graduates from the Engineering Department of East Kazakhstan State Technical University and Ust-Kamenogorsk Polytechnical College.”

Speaking on behalf of AES Kazakhstan, EHS Director Marat Makhambetov, commented: “I would like to thank my colleagues from GIZ for fruitful cooperation and support! I am sure that our joint project will be sustainable results in the form of training of competent specialists who will continue to work for the benefit of the energy industry not only of East Kazakhstan, but of the republic as a whole.”

Yulia Bazhenova, develoPPP.de project manager (GIZ), added: "our joint GIZ-AES project East Kazakhstan regional sustainability project: workplace safety and energy efficiency training’ that started in April 2015 is now entering its final phase. Our joint project addressed a very urgent need in the promotion of the safety and energy efficiency culture in the industrial enterprises in Kazakhstan and in integrating the training on energy efficiency and workplace safety into the country’s educational curricula for vocational training and for higher education. Together with our private partner AES and with the support of East Kazakhstan State Technical University and Ust-Kamenogorsk Polytechnical College we achieved outstanding results in local capacity development in the areas of safety and energy efficiency for technical professionals, academic staff, trainers and local authorities, thus supporting Kazakhstan’s ambitions in matters of energy efficiency and workplace safety."

The development partnership of AES and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is part of the develoPPP.de programme of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Together AES Kazakhstan and GIZ developed workplace safety and energy efficiency training that benefited not only the energy sector, but also the mining, metallurgical and other industries. Also East Kazakhstan State Technical University and Ust-Kamenogorsk Polytechnic College are involved in the project, wh ere AES Kazakhstan and GIZ contributed to the improvement of academic teaching, so as to improve the long-term sustainability of their capacity development measures.
